Decolonise IVS

Supported by

The Decolonise! The project brings together 10 International Voluntary Service organisations who together have engaged in a 2,5 year-long process to better understand the power dynamics and obstacles that are at stake when organising International Voluntary Service projects. While in Europe volunteering is recognised in many countries, outside Europe volunteer organisations often find it difficult to find recognition for the work they do. While many volunteers from the Global North go to the Global South to volunteer, there are very few opportunities for volunteers from the Global South to participate in volunteer programmes abroad, especially in the Global North.

Building an IVS movement that is more inclusive, diverse and environmentally sustainable is the aim of this project. By challenging existing values, practices and structures the organisations want to come up with innovative proposals that take into account the local realities and a fairer distribution of resources while being conscious about the current climate crisis.

Making the Decolonise! Project success is only possible with the active collaboration of all actors involved. It is about changing people’s mindset through dialogue, transforming our organisations and influencing the external stakeholders we work with. The Decolonise! The project is an Erasmus+ cooperation project focussing on working together as IVS organisations and through improved partnership upscaling International Voluntary Service projects. To make this happen we have created different teams which are focussing on different aspects of the project; spaces where volunteers and staff meet and work together to analyse and improve our work.

Most of the work is done online and self-organised. While the participating organisations are taking care of the overall coordination work, the team members work independently in smaller sub-teams on specific tasks.

Knowledge Hub

In this section, we bring together all the resources we encountered during our Decolonise IVS project, as well as the materials we developed along the way. Decolonisation is a complex topic that intersects with various societal issues such as racism, earth custodianship, and more. In the overall resources section of the CCIVS website, you can find additional materials on topics that are important for transforming International Voluntary Service organizations.

Do you have more materials on Decolonisation that you would like to share? Send it to secretariat@ccivs.org so we can upload it in the relevant section.
