At South Africa Volunteer Work Camp Association (SAVWA), we believe in the transformative power of intercultural learning and inclusive digital exchange. Our partnership with LIVE-EX consortium members has opened dynamic avenues for empowering youth, bridging cultural gaps, and fostering solidarity across borders especially through the promotion of high-quality virtual engagement.
Since the LIVE- Ex project’s launch, SAVWA has engaged young leaders and volunteers in a series of virtual and in-person activities that build digital literacy, intercultural understanding, and global citizenship. One of the standout moments was our mentor’s training program held in Pretoria, South Africa in October 2024. This gathering not only offered skills training but also deepened bonds among participants from different consortium countries, laying the groundwork for stronger collaboration and mutual learning. It gave us an opportunity to meet up also with EU South Africa representatives and delegation.
We are currently piloting a virtual exchange series that connects South African youth with their peers in South Africa and other parts of Africa. These sessions are designed to promote critical discussions around climate justice, active citizenship, and sustainable community development topics that resonate deeply with the lived experiences of our youth.
However, this journey has not been without challenges. Reliable internet access and digital infrastructure in underserved communities like Soshanguve remain a hurdle. But through innovative local partnerships and shared learning within the LIVE-EX network, we continue to find ways to adapt and ensure inclusivity. We have had several capacity building training sessions and recently held a gardening training workshop with participants from local undergraduate students from local university of TUT. We held a clean up campaign with conjunction with several stakeholders including City of Tshwane, Humanity Pursuite NPO.
Looking ahead, SAVWA is excited to co-host a regional digital storytelling workshop. This event will bring together participants from LIVE-EX partners to co-create stories that reflect their community impact, identity, and vision for the future. We invite all partners to join us in shaping this powerful exchange.
LIVE-EX has shown us that digital connection, when rooted in empathy and equity, can be just as impactful as physical mobility. We’re proud to be part of a network that uplifts youth voices and redefines what international volunteering looks like in the 21st century.
