Press conference in Rome: Palestine’s environmental legacy of occupation and war

When the fighting stops, the damage does not. That is the message behind a press conference taking place in Rome this Thursday, 5 November, which sets out to put a spotlight on one of the least discussed sides of the situation in Palestine: what the Israeli occupation and the war are doing to the environment, and how long those effects will last.

The event, titled “Palestine: The Environmental Legacy of Occupation and War”, runs from 10:30 to 12:30 at the headquarters of Libera Contro le Mafie, Via Stamira 5, Rome. It will also be streamed live on Zoom, so anyone can follow along from wherever they are.

The organisers say the environmental consequences of the occupation and the war are still too often overlooked, even though their impact will continue long after hostilities end. The aim of the press conference is to bring that issue to the attention of the media and the wider public.

Representatives of the Palestinian organisations involved in the project will speak alongside Vanessa Pallucchi, Vice President of Legambiente; Cecilia Strada and Annalisa Corrado, Members of the European Parliament; and Luisa Morgantini of AssoPacePalestina.

Beyond the panel itself, the morning is meant as a meeting point. Organisations and activists working on environmental protection, peace, human rights and social justice are invited to come together, compare notes and build stronger links between their movements.

Everyone is welcome, in person or online, and the organisers encourage sharing the invitation with friends, colleagues and other organisations who may want to take part.
