The Clean Up Lagos initiative was a youth-led community project implemented by the LIVE-Ex Team Nigeria in Yaba, Lagos State, between June and October 2025. The project responded to persistent waste management challenges in urban communities, with a focus on promoting proper waste segregation, responsible disposal, and increased environmental awareness.
At its core, the initiative aimed to demonstrate that effective waste management is a shared responsibility. By engaging residents directly, the project encouraged simple, practical actions that contribute to cleaner environments and improved public health.
Community, Engagement and Local Action
Activities carried out during the project included community sensitisation sessions, informal discussions, and hands-on engagements with youths, students, and households in the Yaba area. These interactions created space for learning, dialogue, and shared responsibility around waste management.
Changes and Learning
Over the course of the project, noticeable shifts in awareness and attitudes were observed among community members. Many residents developed a clearer understanding of the link between improper waste disposal, flooding, and public health risks.
Young people involved in the initiative gained first-hand experience in environmental action and community mobilisation. Several households also expressed willingness to continue separating waste beyond the project period.
Linking Local Action to Global Goals
The Clean Up Lagos project highlighted the connection between local environmental action and global development priorities. By promoting responsible waste practices and community ownership, the initiative contributed to the objectives of Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
“This project showed me that meaningful change does not always require big resources. It starts with awareness, consistency, and people choosing to take responsibility for their environment.”
— Akande Motunrayo, Project Team Member
Challenges and Community Response
The project faced initial hesitation from some residents. These challenges were addressed through peer-to-peer engagement and the support of local community members. By fostering open dialogue and participation, the team gradually built trust and cooperation.
Overall, the Clean Up Lagos initiative demonstrated the power of youth-led action in addressing environmental challenges. The project showed that with the right approach, young people can inspire behavioural change, strengthen community ownership, and contribute to healthier and more sustainable urban environments.
“Earth first. Everything else follows.”
— Fabunmi Ayoola, Mentor, Team Nigeria
