LIVE-EX Zimbabwe: Empowering Youth for Climate Action and a Greener Future

Zimbabwe Workcamps Association (ZWA) is proud to lead the LIVE-EX project in Zimbabwe, connecting young people to climate action and sustainable development solutions. Under the mentorship of Ian Mugowa and Agatha Mubaiwa, and with coordination by Ratherford Mwaruta, the project is inspiring the next generation to take meaningful action for a greener, more resilient future.

What is LIVE-EX Zimbabwe?

LIVE-EX (Live Exchange) is a dynamic initiative blending physical and virtual exchange programs across Zimbabwe. It brings together passionate young participants to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices on environmental protection, climate resilience, and community-driven solutions.

Through interactive workshops, hands-on activities, and engaging discussions, participants learn from one another’s successes and challenges in key areas such as:

  • Climate-Resilient Agriculture
  • Water Conservation and Management
  • Waste Management and Recycling

LIVE-EX fosters a collaborative environment that promotes:

  • Knowledge Sharing and Innovation
  • Networking and Partnership Building
  • Capacity Building and Skills Development

Together, these efforts are creating a community of practice that strengthens sustainable development initiatives across Zimbabwe.

Local Impact: Mutambara High School and Rusape Youths

Two important in-person sessions were held in partnership with Mutambara High School and Rusape Youths in Manicaland Province. Students at Mutambara High School actively engaged in the LIVE-EX program, exploring creative solutions to tackle climate change impacts like drought and soil erosion. Through teamwork, innovation, and passion, these young changemakers demonstrated the powerful role youth can play in protecting our planet.

Manicaland Province, severely affected by Cyclone Idai in 2019, was chosen for this initiative due to its recent experiences with climate-induced disasters. Cyclone Idai caused massive loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and left many communities struggling for basic necessities. Many young people in the region still bear the emotional scars of this tragedy, making climate education and action more urgent than ever.

By bringing LIVE-EX to Manicaland, ZWA aimed to raise climate change awareness, strengthen community resilience, and empower youth to take proactive steps toward disaster preparedness and environmental stewardship.

A Call to Action from Zimbabwe’s Youth Leaders

LIVE-EX mentor Ian Mugowa shares an urgent message with young people:

“The more we delay in taking action, the more disasters and regulations we will face in the future. Join the LIVE-EX community today and be part of the sustainable transformation. Together, let’s build a more resilient and greener future for all!”
