Short summary:
The manual ‘Extending the Practice of Gender through Intercultural Learning: Gender Sensitivity at (Voluntary) Work’ aims at providing voluntary service organisations with appropriate tools and methods to address gender issues in the multitude of international voluntary service projects taking place in different national and social contexts every year. The publication takes into account the specific and diverse intercultural contexts of IVS projects, seeking thus to support voluntary service organisations in their preparation of volunteers and local communities and to improve their capacity to deal with complex cultural interactions based on particular notions of gender roles which become important determinants of people’s choices and capabilities, and are, at the same time, a potential source of discrimination and exclusion. The manual provides a framework for exploring gender roles in different societies and linking the general reflections on gender to the participation of youth, in particular young women, in IVS projects and their interaction in diverse cultural contexts.
