Why are we here today? Why are you here today? What made you get involved in your respective organisations? What made you want to help? To change things, to make the world a better place?
Today we are celebrating the Gender Rights day. Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.
Gender equality is not achieved anywhere in the world. Inequalities, violences and discriminations based on gender identity, expression, or sexual orientations are prevalent worldwide This topic has to be addressed by any network or organisation that aims to contribute to a just and fairer global community.
For us, in the Alliance of European Voluntary Service Organisations, “gender equality means equal rights and equal opportunities for everyone regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation. Gender equality recognises the diversity of everyone’s interests, needs and priorities. It is a human right.”
With thousands of projects around the world, IVS organisations offer a huge number of different volunteering opportunities every year. Aiming to make these experiences a space of gender equality, we are working towards an equal society with no gender gaps.
In the end, the changes we make within our networks and organisations have an impact and contribute to much bigger changes in society.
Without gender equality, there are no human rights. Whatever your motives, thank you for being here.
